Following a very enjoyable 2 hour show at the World Theatre on the Saturday evening, the NQ Scots band held a 2 hour workshop on the Sunday morning.
We had a great turnout, of all ages. But we were particularly pleased to see so many kids come along. Everyone was assigned an instructor and those with already developed skills received personal tuition while those that were new to the instruments received an overview of the bagpipes and the drums, who they work, and how modern technology is making its way into how these ancient instruments are played.
By the end of the workshop we had learner pipers who had never played the instrument before attempting Amazing Grace. Well, that was simply amazing! And it came as no surprise that the kids just loved the high tension snare drums.
The NQ Scots mid section, also received instruction from attending tutor Lance McNamara from Brisbane.
By the end of the 2 hour session it was clear that there were sufficient numbers in Charters Towers to start a little pipe band and some encouragement in this regard was given by Fraser Martin who related the story of the recently successfully launched Mossman Pipe Band. Some of its members learned to play inside of 6 months for Anzac Day 2011.
The NQ Scots band offers its support to the citizens of Charters Towers in any way it can to support the launch of such a venture.
